The aromas grab your attention out of the gate! The deep dark red color hardly allows the sunlight to pass through it. A complex wine with a concentrated statement of black plum, sliced mushrooms, tobacco and leather fill your sense of smell. The flavors are bountiful and complex with chewy tannins, full body and ends with a full support of acidity which fades perfectly and slowly to a pleasing long dry finish.
Dutton Ranch farms over eighty unique, separate vineyards located in the coolest areas of the Russian River Valley, primarily in the sub-appellation known as the Green Valley. We have selected our favorite vineyards from our family’s ranches to craft wine reflecting our vision of a signature Russian River Valley Syrah. My Fathers Vineyard named for Tracy Dutton’s mother and father’s home property, was planted by Joe Dutton in 2002. Planted in one of the coldest regions of the Russian River AVA, this vineyard consistently produces some of Dutton Estate Winery’s most sought after Syrah’s.
Upon arrival from an early morning harvest, the fruit from the My Fathers Vineyard is gently hand sorted and then de-stemmed and cold soaked. Fermentation then takes place in open top fermentors and punched down by hand manually up to four times per day to extract optimal flavors of the vineyard. The wine is then racked into French and American oak (40% new oak) for the 10-month ageing process. Upon completion of secondary fermentation, barrels were then blended to create our finished product for bottling in August 2014.
A cold climate Syrah from the outer edges of the Russian River Valley AVA, this wine tantalizes the taste buds with a bounty of flavors and scents. Leather, cassis and mushrooms are all present to the nose. Black fruit, plums and blackberry come alive in the mouth. A big cool climate Syrah with plenty of body you will be enjoy this wine for years to come.
Cherry Ridge Vineyard, planted in 1991 is an east facing vineyard and planted in one of the coolest sections of the Green Valley. The soil consists of the traditional Gold Ridge Soil, which is prominent in the Green Valley and Russian River Valley. Subject to Sonoma Coasts’ fog funneling through the Green Valley, this vineyard-designated wine expresses the terroir of a rare cool climate syrah. Cheerful and spicy flavors intertwined with bold dark fruits show focus while subtly combining sweet notes of black fruits and forest floor.
Upon arrival from an early morning harvest, the fruit from Cherry Ridge Vineyard is de-stemmed and cold-soaked. Primary fermentations take place in small, open top tanks and manually punched down up to four times per day. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and racked into American oak to age. Upon completion of secondary fermentation in barrel, each barrel is tasted and selected for the Cherry Ridge Vineyard designated wine. Five barrels of the final blend rested for 10 months and was bottled in August 2015.
