Our prestigious fruit is derived from our family’s appraised farming operation, Dutton Ranch. Our family vineyard operation is located in the heart of Green Valley’s Russian River Valley, and are within the Sonoma Coast AVA. Our winery is just shy of 15 miles as a crow flies from Sonoma Coasts’ Pacific Ocean. Many of our vineyards lie within 7-15 miles of the coastline, stretching inland approximately 20 miles. The vineyard locations allow our wines to show the distinct variation of micro-climates inherent of the famed wine growing region. Dutton Ranch farms a total of 1,200 acres of premium quality wine grapes using the Certified Sonoma County Sustainable Grape Growing Program and 200 acres of California Certified Organic Apples. Of the 1,400 total acres of grapes and apples, the Dutton Family own and lease approximately 900 acres and manage approximately 500. The land of Dutton Ranch totals 115 vineyard and orchard locations (83 vineyard sites and 32 apple orchard sites). Dutton Ranch vineyards and orchards are within the Russian River Valley AVA, the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA, and all of our vineyards are in the Sonoma Coast AVA.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the predominant varieties growing in the Dutton Ranch vineyards. We have 17 different clones of Chardonnay and 14 different clones of Pinot Noir planted. Additionally, Dutton Ranch produces Sauvignon Blanc (2 clones), Syrah (5 clones), Zinfandel (a heritage clone), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris (2 clones), and a small block each of Gewurztraminer and Viognier.
Resembling a Hollywood film production, our fruit is harvested at night. Night harvesting is optimal for winemaking as it ensures that the fruit is picked cool and brought directly to the winery with the least amount of handling and intervention. For our hard working vineyard crews who pick by hand, the cooler night and early morning temperatures make this difficult work more manageable.
Dutton Ranch and the Dutton family is dedicated to sustaining the land for future generations. Our vineyards are farmed Sonoma County Sustainable and Certified Fish Friendly. Our orchards are Certified Organic. Dutton Estate Winery is a California Sustainable Winery. Joe Dutton, a fifth-generation farmer and owner of Dutton Ranch, works tirelessly and dedicated with an amazing team and crew tending to vineyard operations to grow world-renowned grapes. Dutton Estate Winery is one of approximatley 100 wineries sourcing grapes from a hand-full of the 83 Dutton Ranch vineyard sites. Roughly, 25 wine producers/wine brands show Dutton Ranch or the name of a vineyard site on the wine label.
